For more than three decades, Dr. Janet Perkins, MD, MS has cared for women during some of the most significant moments of their lives. As a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, she has delivered babies, guided families through difficult decisions, celebrated moments of joy, and stood beside women during times of uncertainty and loss.
Yet after thousands of patient encounters, one truth became impossible to ignore.
Many women leave healthcare feeling unseen.
Unheard.
And, too often, their experiences are dismissed or forgotten.
Throughout her career, Dr. Perkins witnessed the extraordinary strength of the women she cared for. She also saw the profound impact that compassionate listening, honest communication, and shared decision-making could have on a person's healthcare journey. Those experiences shaped not only the physician she became but also the advocate and author she is today.
Dr. Perkins believes exceptional healthcare extends beyond diagnoses and procedures. It begins with listening. It means recognizing that every woman brings her own values, experiences, fears, and hopes into the exam room. It means ensuring patients understand their options, feel respected in their decisions, and know their voices matter.
This philosophy has guided every stage of her career.
As both a physician and educator, she has dedicated herself to promoting informed consent, respectful maternity care, and evidence-based medicine while honoring each patient's right to make choices that align with their own beliefs and circumstances.
Today, Dr. Perkins continues that mission through her writing.
Her book, Unseen, Unheard, Undone, explores the stories, emotions, and experiences that often go untold within women's healthcare. It is an invitation to listen more deeply, ask better questions, and create a healthcare system where compassion is valued as highly as clinical excellence.
Whether speaking with patients, mentoring colleagues, or connecting with readers, Dr. Perkins remains committed to one simple belief:
Every person deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.
Because healing begins when people feel seen.
When they feel heard.
And when they know their story matters.
Dr. Janet Perkins earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine and also holds a Master of Science degree. Over more than 30 years in obstetrics and gynecology, she has cared for thousands of women through pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and every stage of reproductive health.
Her career has been built on combining clinical excellence with genuine human connection—helping patients understand their options, navigate complex medical decisions, and feel supported throughout their healthcare journey.
"Medicine has taught me that every patient has a story. Sometimes what people need most isn't another opinion—they need someone willing to truly listen.
My hope is that through my work, both as a physician and as an author, more women will feel empowered to ask questions, trust their instincts, and know that their voices deserve a place in every healthcare conversation.
If my journey has taught me anything, it's this: healing begins with being seen, being heard, and being believed."
